Akureyri Hospital set a goal for the year 2017 to become a center for specialized health services in North and East Iceland and get an international certification for its operations. On 18 December 2015 it was certified that Akureyri Hospital complied with the requirements of DNV GL's International Accreditation Program for Hospitals.
Akureyri Hospital provides general and specialized health care services, which focus on emergency care and major specialty treatments.
It is one of two specialty hospitals in the country and plays a key role in civil protection.
The hospital is a teaching hospital and as a knowledge organization it takes pride in teaching and research in health care sciences. Akureyri Hospital focuses on cooperation with health care institutions in rural areas and participates in the development of national health care and the ambulance centre in the country.
